Safety & Privacy Controls on TikTok

By Infinitum Imagery LLC · Updated September 1, 2026 · Adapted from TikTok Safety Center and the Infinitum LIVE Creator Academy

TikTok offers several tools to help you manage your safety, privacy, and content experience. These controls help you decide who can interact with you and what content you see. For creators — especially those going LIVE — understanding them before you need them is cheaper than learning after a bad DM, a download you did not authorize, or a feed full of content you never asked for.

Keep in mind that these features and settings may vary depending on your age or local laws. TikTok's own Help Center and Safety Center are the final authority when a setting moves or a region applies different rules.

This guide summarizes TikTok's published safety and privacy controls. Confirm current wording and availability in TikTok's Safety Center and Help Center before you rely on a specific setting path.

1. Account settings

Account settings help you manage your account information on TikTok. Key options include choosing between a private or public account, downloading your data, Family Pairing, selecting how your ads are personalized, and controlling whether your account is suggested to others.

Most of these live under Profile → Menu ☰ → Settings and privacy → Privacy. If you are building a creator presence, decide intentionally whether you want discovery from strangers or a tighter circle — a public account with open DMs behaves very differently from a private account with suggestion settings turned down.

Do this

  • Review private vs. public before your first LIVE or brand outreach.
  • Use Download your data when you need a copy of what TikTok stores.
  • Set up Family Pairing when a parent or guardian should supervise a teen account.
  • Check Suggest your account to others so discovery matches your comfort level.

Avoid

  • Assuming default settings match how you want to be found or contacted.
  • Sharing passwords instead of using Family Pairing for supervised accounts.

2. Content controls

Content controls help you manage the posts you see on your For You feed. To explore TikTok in a safer way, TikTok offers tools that let you personalize your feed:

Creators still benefit from a curated For You feed. What you consume shapes what you imitate, react to, and discuss on LIVE. Training your feed is part of professional hygiene, not just casual browsing.

Do this

  • Add filter keywords for topics you do not want repeated in your feed.
  • Use Not interested instead of scrolling past unwanted posts silently.
  • Turn on Restricted Mode if you want an extra limit on certain content categories.

3. Community controls

Community controls help you manage who can interact with you or your content.

Manage who can view your content

You can apply different privacy settings to each post you share, whether your account is private or public. Visibility settings determine how your content is seen on TikTok, and you can adjust them later if you change your mind.

Control who messages you

Direct messaging helps you connect with friends and community on TikTok. Direct messaging is only available to registered account holders who are at least 16 years old. You can control who can send you messages. Parents and guardians can also set restrictions through Family Pairing.

Decide who can comment

You can decide who can comment on your posts and Stories. Depending on your age, TikTok offers different comment controls. If a parent or guardian manages your account through Family Pairing, that may change how you adjust comment settings yourself.

Filter, turn off, delete, or report comments

You can turn comment filters on or off at any time. You are also in control of comments on your posts — turn comments off, delete a comment, or report a comment when needed. On TikTok LIVE, creators and moderators can manage comments in the room as well. For LIVE-specific safety habits, read TikTok LIVE Safety: Protecting Yourself and Your Room.

Do this

  • Set post visibility per video when a clip needs tighter control.
  • Limit DMs to friends or followers if you do not want open inboxes.
  • Turn on comment filters before harassment escalates.

Avoid

  • Assuming post comment settings automatically cover LIVE moderation tools.
  • Engaging with every troll instead of using block, filter, and report tools.

4. Blocking and removing followers

Block an account — TikTok allows you to block people from interacting with you or your content for any reason. When you block someone, they cannot view your posts or engage with you through direct messages, comments, follows, or likes. There is no limit to how many people you can block.

Remove a follower — you can remove someone from following you, which means your content will no longer appear in their Following feed. That is useful when you do not want to block entirely but do want someone out of your follower list.

5. Liked posts, downloads, Duet and Stitch

Liked content — you can prevent others from seeing posts you have liked. Liked posts are hidden from your profile by default when you create a TikTok account.

Downloads — you can manage post download settings so people cannot download videos or photos you have posted when the setting is off, including future content.

Duet and Stitch — you can control who can Duet or Stitch your videos and manage content created with your videos. The content reuse setting affects who can Duet, Stitch, create stickers with your posts, and add your post to their Story. You can set this per post or in privacy settings.

6. Suggested accounts

TikTok may suggest accounts to you and suggest your account to others based on contacts, Facebook friends, mutual connections, and people who open or send links to you. You control this through:

Important details from TikTok's documentation:

To change how your account is suggested: Profile → Menu ☰ → Settings and privacy → Privacy → Suggest your account to others.

Next steps for creators

Privacy controls protect your account and your peace of mind. They do not replace policy knowledge or LIVE room safety.
